CLIENT SUCCESS STORIESPAUL'S STORY
Paul was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer when in his 50s and was subsequently forced to quit his job. He applied for Social Security disability payments only to learn the shocking news that he had been living undocumented in the U.S. his entire life and thus did not qualify for Social Security.
Born in Canada to a Canadian father and a U.S. citizen mother, Paul had lived in the U.S. since he was two weeks old. At the time of his birth, however, his mother was too young to transfer U.S. citizenship to him. Desperate to receive benefits that would allow him to seek treatment for his cancer, he came to ILAP.
ILAP helped him apply for residency under a special law for those who can prove they have lived continuously in the U.S. since before 1972. His case was approved and he is now a legal permanent resident in the U.S. As a result, he has been able to obtain the disability payments and Medicaid needed to help him through his cancer treatments.
