INFORMATION FOR INDIVIDUALS SEEKING LEGAL HELP

+ Do I qualify for ILAP’s services?

ILAP services are either free or low cost. We serve low-income Maine residents only. You will be asked about your household income in order to request an Intake appointment.

If you are seeking immigration assistance but believe you are over our income guidelines, we can provide a referral list of private immigration attorneys in Maine.

ILAP is only able to serve people who live in Maine. If you live in another state, please refer to our Immigration Resources page to locate services in your area.

+ What if I do not speak English?

ILAP offers telephone or in-person interpretation for all phone and Skype calls, office visits and meetings with ILAP legal staff and volunteers. You may also bring an adult you trust to interpret for you.

+ How can I make an appointment?

If you qualify for ILAP’s services, you must start by scheduling an Intake appointment. At Intake, we get basic information about you and the type of help you are looking for. If you live outside of the Portland area, you can ask for your Intake appointment to be done over the phone or Skype.

You can request an Intake appointment by phone or in person:

If ILAP is able to help you after learning more about you during your Intake appointment, we will schedule a new appointment for you to meet with legal staff or volunteers. You will be told about any information or documents that you will need to collect and bring to that meeting.

Because we are a small organization, we are not always able to help everyone who completes an Intake appointment. You may also need to wait several weeks for your new appointment. Thank you for your patience and understanding.
