Immigrant Legal Advocacy Elects Alicia Curtis, Esq. as New Board President
PORTLAND - At their September board meeting, the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP) welcomed Alicia Curtis, Esq. as its new Board President.
Alicia joined the ILAP Board in 2017 and served in several leadership roles prior to being elected President. As a volunteer attorney on ILAP’s Pro Bono Panel since 2015, she has also helped many people seeking asylum, including several victories in Immigration Court.
“Alicia has a thoughtfulness and drive that will be indispensable to ILAP as we navigate this moment so full of potential for real change. As a pro bono attorney and Board member, she has proven herself as an invaluable member of ILAP and we look forward to our continued growth with Alicia serving in this new leadership role,” said ILAP Executive Director Sue Roche. “Her election and ongoing service is a testament to our partnership with Berman & Simmons, which has been instrumental in growing our services in Lewiston.”
“I am honored to serve ILAP in a new role as Board President. Immigrants bring so much value to Maine and its culture and economy,” Alicia reflected. “ILAP’s work in helping people navigate through immigration law and procedure and in advocating for more just laws, is more important than ever. I’m excited to be a part of this work.”
Alicia works as an attorney at Berman & Simmons in Lewiston, where she concentrates her practice on complex motion practice, appeals, and insurance coverage disputes. Prior to her legal career, Alicia was a social worker and manager of social service programs, working with people experiencing mental illness and homelessness. She earned a B.A from Reed College, a Master’s degree in Social Work from Boston University, and a J.D. summa cum laude from the University of Maine School of Law.
About the Immigrant Legal Advocacy Project (ILAP): ILAP is Maine’s only state-wide immigration legal services organization. It helps people navigate the complex and increasingly unjust U.S. immigration system we have now, while advocating for fairer and more compassionate immigration laws and policies for the future.
