Advocacy in action
ILAP helps immigrant community members navigate the immigration system we have now while we advocate for a fairer and more just immigration system for the future.
We collaborate with partners to protect and advance the rights of immigrants and rebuild an immigration system rooted in justice. ILAP shares our expertise on important immigration law and policy issues through press releases, testimonies before decision makers, public comments, reports, and sign-on letters. You can read our recent advocacy materials below.

ILAp’s Advocacy:
ILAP unequivocally opposes the Laken Riley Act, which politicizes and exploits the tragic death of Laken Riley to pave the way for the incoming administration’s extremist, anti-immigrant mass deportation agenda.
The Biden administration announced it will be finalizing a rule automatically extending work permits for certain noncitizens. ILAP applauds Maine Governor Mills, Representative Pingree, and Senator King for successfully advocating for this urgently needed change to protect Maine businesses and immigrant workers.
ILAP submits a public comment commending Maine’s Department of Health and Human Services’ (DHHS) on proposal for mandatory training for General Assistance administrators. ILAP also provided recommendations for training topics to ensure immigrants receive trauma-informed and culturally competent assistance.
In the aftermath of the 2024 presidential election, ILAP remains at the ready to fiercely advocate for immigrant rights and provide direct support to Maine’s immigrant communities.
ILAP joins partners across the country in condemning the Biden Administration’s final rule that effectively blocks access to asylum. The rule endangers the lives of people seeking safety and flies in the face of U.S. law and international treaties.
ILAP enthusiastically applauds Secretary Mayorkas’ decision to extend and redesignate TPS for Haiti , a life-saving decision that will protect more than 520,000 people from deadly and devolving conditions in Haiti.
ILAP celebrates the Biden administration’s actions to create new pathways to citizenship for mixed status families and remove barriers to employment for Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients.
ILAP submits a public comment urging USCIS to make automatic extensions of work permits longer and permanent, as well as put in place systems to help people at risk of losing work authorization due to government processing delays to alert the government that urgent action is needed.
