Maine – Department of Homeland Security Secretary Noem announced the termination of Temporary Protected Status for Nicaragua and Honduras. Unless halted by the courts, more than 75,000 people will lose their TPS protection from deportation and work permits on September 8, 2025. Since TPS was first designated for Hondurans and Nicaraguans in January of 1999, ILAP has helped many clients with their TPS cases, and during that time, they have lived, worked, and raised families in Maine.
Sue Roche, ILAP’s Executive Director said: “TPS for Hondurans and Nicaraguans has been in place for more than 26 years and has provided vital humanitarian protection to thousands of people across the country, including people here in Maine. Over the course of decades of calling the U.S. home, Honduran and Nicaraguan TPS holders have put down deep roots, raised and nurtured their families, become embedded in the workforce and economy, and have made deep and lasting contributions to their communities and our country as a whole. Not only do dangerous conditions remain in both countries that make the termination of TPS improper, ripping people out of their communities after 26 years is unbelievably cruel and senseless on a policy level. We hope to see the courts halt yet another politically-motivated TPS termination and we continuously demand that Congress take action to protect Maine residents and TPS holders across the nation.”
