Supporter Spotlight: The Nickersons

The Nickersons: Living Their Values

Nancy and Nate Nickerson have long been committed to supporting immigrants in Maine, believing everyone — no matter where they come from — deserves access to the same opportunities.

In the 1990s, the Nickersons provided shelter for immigrants fleeing violence and persecution, including for a Salvadoran family for more than a year. That experience showed them how vital strong legal support is for immigrants navigating complex systems and seeking safety.

Over the years, Nancy and Nate have opened their home to many others, including a nursing student from Haiti, a teen from Burundi, a woman from the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and a young woman from Rwanda.

In the early 2000s, they learned about ILAP and began what has now become more than two decades of steady support. They have also remained engaged members of the community, attending educational events and celebrations, as well as sharing thoughtful feedback through ILAP’s donor survey.

Our support of ILAP flows naturally from our values of human worth and dignity, and belief that those fleeing violence, fear, and untenable circumstances deserve a chance for a better life.

“While Nate and I have provided hospitality and housing, we could not fill the role ILAP has played, which has been invaluable and life-altering, often lifesaving for so many. Our support of ILAP flows naturally from our values of human worth and dignity, and belief that those fleeing violence, fear, and untenable circumstances deserve a chance for a better life.”

Nancy shared that ILAP’s impact has been especially evident since the change in administration last year brought a rapidly shifting legal environment marked by narrowed pathways to relief, increased enforcement and detention, and heightened uncertainty for immigrant communities in Maine. She noted that ILAP has clearly and publicly stood with immigrants in our community, affirming dignity, offering Know Your Rights education, and continuing to provide critical legal support.

“Thank you, ILAP, for embracing a narrative of inclusion and human worth, and being an expert and compassionate voice and presence in Maine.”

About the Pillars of Justice Giving Circles

In late 2025, we introduced the new giving circles of the India Street Society. The new circles reflect the many ways ILAP supporters show up for justice year after year. This new model recognizes not just the size of a gift but the intention and consistency behind it.

In this donor spotlight, we’re highlighting a member of the Pillars of Justice, one of ILAP’s new giving circles consisting of supporters who give $1,000+ annually and/or have supported ILAP for ten years or more. Pillars of Justice donors demonstrate major commitment and leadership through long-term, consistent support
