Supporter Spotlight: The Heart of Peaks Island
Peaks Island is among the many communities across Maine living their values out loud and showing up for immigrant justice.
In the past few years, this small, tight-knit community has become a powerful force behind ILAP’s work. From creative fundraising ideas to heartfelt individual gifts, the support from Peaks has been as steady as it is inspiring.
Earlier this fall, the grassroots group Defending Democracy hosted its third homemade ice cream sandwich fundraiser, bringing neighbors together for a joyful day of sun, sweets, and solidarity. Across all their events, they’ve raised more than $2,700 for ILAP and, in the process, built something even more enduring: community connection.
They describe these gatherings as “a real community builder, with participation (whether in the making of the sandwiches or the eating thereof) across all demographics.” What began as a small act of care has grown into a shared island tradition, one that strengthens connections and deepens solidarity with immigrant neighbors.
But the story doesn’t end there.
Peaks Island is home to more than 100 ILAP donors — an impressive number for a community of its size. Among them are longtime supporters, new friends, and people from all walks of life who share a common belief: that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and the chance to thrive. Each gift, no matter the size, adds up to something powerful — collective care in action.
We’ve also seen how Peaks Island residents continue to learn, engage, and show up for one another. Neighbors and the Defending Democracy group gather not just in moments of crisis, but consistently: “We write letters to our elected officials, participate in rallies, and make as much noise as we can to indicate that we are not happy with what’s happening in Washington, especially as it trickles down to our hardworking immigrant families.”
“Many of us were feeling helpless — what can I possibly do that will make any difference?” one member of Defending Democracy reflected. “Through these fundraisers, we’re seeing that our small actions, multiplied many times over, can add up to a sum that can offer some help to our neighbors in need. I would encourage any group to do what they can. Any effort is better than no effort, and you’ll feel better for knowing that you’ve tried to make a difference.”
To everyone in this remarkable community: thank you. Your care, your action, and your belief in justice make a lasting difference. We’re honored to be in this work with you.
