India Street Society

A Community United for Justice

As the home for ILAP’s giving circles, the India Street Society brings together donors with a shared commitment to dignity, fairness, and belonging — supporting the legal services and advocacy that keep families safe, strengthen communities, and build a more inclusive Maine.

Named after the historic street in Portland where generations of immigrants first arrived in Maine — and where ILAP opened its first standalone office — the India Street Society reflects both our shared history and our vision for a future where everyone belongs and thrives.

Whether through monthly giving, long-term support, major gifts, or planned giving, members of our giving circles help ensure that ILAP’s services remain accessible to those who need them most.

Advocates for Justice

Monthly Gifts

Advocates for Justice sustain ILAP’s everyday work through consistent monthly giving. This steady support allows ILAP to respond to urgent needs, adapt as circumstances change, and stand strong in the face of injustice.

Monthly giving is one of the most reliable ways to support ILAP’s mission and helps ensure we can be present for immigrant communities year-round.

Ambassadors of Justice

Ambassadors of Justice are individuals and families whose continued generosity helps keep ILAP strong — not just in moments of urgency, but through the long work of building systems rooted in fairness and compassion.

Whether this is your first year giving or you have supported ILAP faithfully for many years, this circle honors your commitment to immigrant justice in Maine.

Ambassadors receive:

  • Special updates on ILAP’s legal and policy work

  • Special recognition in our Annual Report and other publications

Pillars of Justice

Annual gifts of $1,000+ or 10+ years of sustained giving (any amount)

Pillars of Justice are deeply committed supporters whose generosity strengthens ILAP’s long-term stability, growth, innovation, and capacity to respond to emerging needs.

Through significant annual gifts or a decade of sustained support, Pillars help ensure that ILAP can meet today’s challenges while continuing to build a more just tomorrow.

 Pillars receive:

  •  All Ambassador benefits

  • Personalized updates and deeper engagement with ILAP leadership

  • Opportunities to connect strategically with staff and initiatives that align with your values

This circle is ideal for donors who want to deepen their impact and help move the work forward in significant ways.

Legacy of Justice

Planned Gifts

The Legacy of Justice honors those who include ILAP in their will, trust, or estate plans, ensuring that their commitment to justice lives on for generations. These visionary supporters help secure ILAP’s future, expanding access to legal support for Maine’s immigrant communities well beyond their lifetime.

Legacy gifts come in many forms, but they all reflect a shared belief that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and opportunity — today and always.

Legacy donors receive:

  • All Pillar benefits

  • Support in crafting a gift that reflects your intentions

  • Recognition in the way that feels right for you

If you would like to make a legacy gift, you can email mhankla@ilapmaine.org or call 207-699-4407 to start the conversation. All conversations are confidential, and gifts of any size are warmly welcomed.

A Legacy of Welcome

For more than a century, India Street has symbolized new beginnings. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, countless immigrants arrived by sea and took their first steps toward safety and opportunity by walking up this very street.

In 2000, ILAP continued that legacy when we opened our office at One India Street, creating a place where a new generation of immigrants could find guidance, protection, and hope.
