Direct Legal Services

Each year, ILAP’s direct legal services help nearly 2,500 people find safety from violence and persecution, keep their families together, and move toward economic security.

Community Outreach and Legal Education

ILAP’s community outreach and legal education programs build on the power and resilience of Maine’s immigrant communities — helping people understand their legal rights and options in an era of heightened immigration enforcement.

Systemic Policy Advocacy

ILAP fights for a world where equity, justice, human rights, and dignity guide every step of the immigration journey — and where all people have access to the resources they need to thrive.

ILAP ESSENTIALS

Mission and Impact

ILAP is Maine’s only statewide organization providing free immigration legal services. Through legal aid and advocacy, ILAP has worked for over 30 years to ensure safety, stability, and opportunity for immigrants and their families across the state.

Clients and Community

Each year, ILAP reaches more than 5,000 people across Maine — and over the last 30+ years, we’ve helped tens of thousands of immigrants put down roots, find safety, and strengthen our communities.

Strategic Priorities and Sustainability

The journey toward justice continues. Despite ongoing economic and political uncertainty, ILAP remains committed to sustaining our services and expanding to meet the evolving needs of Maine’s immigrant communities.

ILAP Highlights

Detention Project

Immigration detention separates families and disrupts lives overnight. ILAP provides rapid response legal help to Mainers detained by immigration officials.

Rural Maine Project

Maine is a large, rural state — and ILAP believes everyone should have equal access to immigration legal services no matter where they live.

Immigrant Children’s Project

The path to lawful immigration status is often complex — but no child or young person should have to navigate it along. ILAP is here to stand with them.

Asylum Assistance and Legal Orientation Project

Asylum is a legal and human right — but ongoing attacks and unpredictable policy changes have deeply weakened the U.S. asylum system. ILAP remains committed to helping as many people as possible make their rightful asylum claims and find safety from persecution.
