EL SALVADOR TPS [English]
The U.S. government announced that it is extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for El Salvador for 18 months, from September 10, 2023, through March 9, 2025. After that time, the U.S. government may again extend TPS for El Salvador, or may choose to end it.
I have El Salvador TPS. What do I need to do?
You must re-register for TPS between July 12, 2023, and September 10, 2023.
Current Salvadoran TPS holders have work permits that have been automatically extended through June 30, 2024. Salvadoran TPS holders must re-register for TPS and apply for a new work permit before September 10, 2023 to receive TPS and a work permit through March 9, 2025.
However, if your TPS and work permit applications were still pending on June 21, 2023, you do not need to re-register or apply for new work authorization. If your application is approved, your TPS and work authorization will be granted through March 9, 2025.
I do not have El Salvador TPS. Can I apply?
At this time, the U.S. government is only extending TPS for current Salvadoran TPS holders. This means that someone who currently has TPS status can apply to renew that status.
Note: There are some very limited exceptions where someone who did not apply for TPS when it was first designated can apply late. Learn more here under “filing late”: https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/temporary-protected-status
How Do I Request Assistance with El Salvador TPS from ILAP?
If you live in Maine and want to re-register for El Salvador TPS, you can contact ILAP’s Rural Community Liaison, Lourdes Trujillo, at 1-207-200-3694 (calls, text messages, and Whatsapp available).
How Does This Announcement Relate to the Ongoing Court Case Around El Salvador TPS?
Through this announcement, the government is also ending the court case around El Salvador TPS. This court case began in 2018 when Salvadoran TPS holders and their families challenged the Trump administration’s attempt to end TPS for El Salvador. By ending the litigation, the government is undoing that prior decision to end TPS for El Salvador. As always, the government can extend or terminate TPS for El Salvador in the future.
