Nicaragua TPS [English]

The U.S. government announced that it is extending Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Nicaragua for 18 months, from January 6, 2024, to July 5, 2025. After that time, the U.S. government may again extend TPS for Nicaragua, or may choose to end it.

I have Nicaragua TPS. What do I need to do?

  • You must re-register for TPS between November 6, 2023 through July 5, 2025.

  • Current Nicaraguan TPS holders have work permits that have been automatically extended through June 30, 2024. Nicaraguan TPS holders must re-register for TPS and apply for a new work permit before July 5, 2025, to receive TPS and a work permit through July 5, 2025.

I do not have Nicaragua TPS. Can I apply?

At this time, the U.S. government is only extending TPS for current Nicaragua TPS holders. This means that someone who currently has TPS status can apply to renew that status.

Note: There are some very limited exceptions where someone who did not apply for TPS when it was first designated can apply late. Learn more here under “filing late”: https://www.uscis.gov/humanitarian/temporary-protected-status

How Do I Request Assistance with Nicaragua TPS from ILAP?

If you live in Maine and want to re-register for Nicaragua TPS, you can contact ILAP’s Rural Community Liaison, Lourdes Trujillo, at 1-207-200-3694 (calls, text messages, and Whatsapp available).

How Does This Announcement Relate to the Ongoing Court Case Around Nicaragua TPS?

Through this announcement, the government is also ending the court case around Nicaragua TPS. This court case began in 2018 when Nicaraguan TPS holders and their families challenged the Trump administration’s attempt to end TPS for Nicaragua. By ending the litigation, the government is undoing that prior decision to end TPS for Nicaragua. As always, the government can extend or terminate TPS for Nicaragua in the future.
