A Message From Our Executive Director

Following the election results, Maine’s immigrant communities are anxious about what new immigration policies and enforcement actions may come with the new administration, and allies are wondering how they can help. At ILAP, we are working hard to help our clients prepare and to make sure immigrant communities have the information they need.

We are reminding communities that nothing will change until the new administration takes office on January 20, 2025. In the meantime, it is important to take this time to learn about your rights, to understand your immigration options, and to make plans to protect your family.

It is also important to beware of rumors, to seek out accurate information, and to make sure you are getting advice from a qualified immigration lawyer. In this highly charged election year, anti-immigrant rhetoric has reached new levels, and false information has been used to dehumanize immigrants for political purposes. Now more than ever, we need to push back against these falsehoods, seek out and lift up the truth, and support our immigrant communities.

“While the future of immigration now looks different, ILAP’s commitment to working with our community to respond to the needs of immigrants in Maine and advocate for justice remains the same.”
— Sue Roche, Esq.

We want Maine to be welcoming for immigrants coming to the state. They are our neighbors, coworkers, and friends and they bring vibrant cultures, skills, and knowledge that make our communities and economy stronger. We want an immigration system that is fair so they can gain the legal status they need to build their new lives here. At ILAP, we will continue to fight for a just immigration system while we push back against racist and dehumanizing policies and continue to help clients navigate the ever-changing immigration laws.

Much of the work showcased in this newsletter occurred before November’s election. While the future of immigration now looks different, ILAP’s commitment to working with our community to respond to the needs of immigrants in Maine and advocate for justice remains the same.

We will be sharing more information about legal rights and new policies in the months ahead. To follow this news and to join our advocacy efforts, sign up for our monthly “Golden Door” email newsletter here and follow us on Facebook, X/Twitter, Instagram, and LinkedIn.
