TPS Updates for El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Haiti, Sudan, and Nepal [English]

The U.S. government is automatically extending TPS and TPS-related documents for current TPS holders from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, Nepal, Haiti, and Sudan who are covered by the Ramos or Bhattarai court cases. PLEASE NOTE: There are some TPS holders from Sudan and Haiti who are NOT covered by these cases. If you have TPS from Haiti or Sudan, please read the below information carefully to find out whether you are covered by these cases.


Am I Covered By The Ramos Or Bhattarai Court Cases?

 

I am a current TPS holder from El Salvador, Honduras, Nicaragua, or Nepal:

YES, you are covered by this update and the automatic extension applies to you. Your TPS status and work permit have been extended to June 30, 2024. See page 2 for additional information.

 

I am a current TPS holder from Haiti:

  • Current TPS holders from Haiti who first registered for TPS in 2010 and 2011 and have had TPS ever since ARE covered. Your TPS status and work permit have been extended to June 30, 2024. See page 2 for additional information. ILAP encourages Haitian TPS holders in this category to register for TPS under the new Haiti TPS designation. Please contact ILAP for more information.

  • Current TPS holders from Haiti who newly registered for TPS in 2021 or 2022 ARE NOT covered by this automatic extension. TPS for Haiti was extended for these TPS holders through August 3, 2024, through an announcement made in December 2022. Please contact ILAP for more information about re-registering. In June 2024, the U.S. government will announce whether it will extend TPS for Haiti in this category.

  • If you not a current TPS holder but are a Haitian national who has been in the U.S. since November 6, 2022, please contact ILAP for assistance with registering for TPS.

 

I am a current TPS holder from Sudan:

  • Current TPS holders from Sudan who first registered for TPS in the late 1990s and have had TPS ever since ARE covered. Your TPS status and work permit have been extended to June 30, 2024. See below for more information. ILAP encourages Sudanese TPS holders in this category to register for TPS under the new Sudan TPS designation, open until October 19, 2023. Please contact ILAP for more information.

  • Current TPS holders from Sudan who first registered for TPS in 2022 under the new designation of TPS for Sudan ARE NOT covered by this automatic extension. These TPS holders currently have TPS through October 19, 2023. In August 2023, the U.S. government will announce whether it will extend TPS for Sudan in this category.

  • If you not a current TPS holder but are a Sudanese national who has been in the U.S. since April 19, 2022, please contact ILAP for assistance with registering for TPS.


What Is The Update?

For current TPS holders covered by the Ramos or Bhattarai cases, the U.S. government is automatically extending TPS, work permits, and other TPS-related documents from December 31, 2022, through June 30, 2024.


What Do I Need To Do?

  • TPS holders covered by the automatic extension do NOT need to take any action at this time. TPS, work permits, and other TPS-related documents are automatically extended from December 31, 2022, through June 30, 2024.

  • TPS holders can show employers and the Bureau of Motor Vehicles their most recent work permit (even if it is expired) and the Federal Register Notice granting this automatic extension: https://bit.ly/RamosTPSUpdate

  • ILAP recommends that TPS holders from Sudan and Haiti register under the new TPS designations for those countries. Please contact ILAP for more information: https://ilapmaine.org/get-legal-help


What Do I Do If I Have Trouble Showing I Have An Automatic Extension Of My Work Permit At My Job Or Bureau Of Motor Vehicles?

  • TPS holders can show their employers their most recent work permit (even if it is expired) and a copy of the Federal Register Notice to show they have an automatic extension of their work permits through June 30, 2024: https://bit.ly/RamosTPSUpdate

  • The Federal Register Notice contains detailed instructions for employers. Employers may contact USCIS at 888- 464-4218 (TTY 877-875-6028) or email USCIS at I9Central@uscis.dhs.gov with additional questions. Employers can also reach out to the Maine Department of Labor Standards at 207-623-7900 or mdol@maine.gov.

  • For assistance showing your employer you have an automatic extension of your work permit, TPS holders can contact the Department of Justice’s Immigrant and Employee Rights Worker Hotline at 800-255-7688 (TTY 800- 237-2515). TPS holders can also reach out to the Maine Department of Labor Wage and Hours Division hotline at 207-624-6400 (TTY 800-794-1110).

  • TPS holders should bring a copy of the Federal Register Notice with them to BMV appointments: https://bit.ly/RamosTPSUpdate. Managers and Maine Bureau of Motor Vehicles branches have received training and information on TPS. TPS holders who have issues can request to speak to managers to clarify that they have an automatic extension of their work permit.

Remember, if you are covered by this update, you do not need to take any action to receive the automatic extension of your TPS, work permit, and any other TPS-related documents.
