ILAP’s Spring Gathering: Together for Justice

On April 30th, ILAP welcomed supporters, volunteers, and friends to our Spring Gathering at Mechanics’ Hall — an evening of connection, reflection, and shared purpose. At a time when many in our community face growing uncertainty, this gathering reminded us that we are never alone in the work for justice.

Marjorie Hankla, ILAP’s new Development Director, shared her own immigrant experience, exploring how belonging is made possible through care, advocacy, and community. “None of us can find belonging alone,” she shared with the 150+ event attendees. “Community is something we are given — and something we must give to others as well.”

Executive Director Sue Roche reflected on the depth and reach of ILAP’s work, and the remarkable community that makes it all possible. From legal services and systemic advocacy to multilingual outreach and education, Sue spoke about the thousands of immigrants ILAP supports across Maine each year — and the many hands and hearts it takes to make that impact real. She reminded us that it is a shared belief in justice that continues to move our mission forward.

We were especially proud to honor our volunteers, including members of our Pro Bono Panel, whose dedication fuels so much of our work. Last year alone, they contributed more than 2,200 hours of free legal service, helping ILAP meet rising needs while upholding our deep commitment to quality and care. Their generosity — like yours — makes a lasting difference.

Whether you joined us in the room or are reading from afar, please know: you are part of this community. We are already dreaming of more ways to gather, connect, and grow this movement of care and justice.

Special thanks to Norway Savings Bank and Coffee By Design for generously sponsoring this event.

Our Spring Gathering also marked the official launch of our new campaign: Maine, Home for All.

ILAP believes that everyone deserves to feel safe, be with family, and build the life they want here in Maine. In the face of unrelenting attacks on immigrant communities, our goal is a clear message of welcome, belonging, and home. Together, we can hold firm to the future we want to see - a Maine that is home for all.
