ETHIOPIA TPS [English]

The United States government is offering Temporary Protected Status (TPS) to Ethiopian nationals who have been in the U.S. since October 20, 2022.


What is TPS?

TPS gives people temporary protection from deportation, legal status, and a work permit (Employment Authorization Card). TPS is temporary. The current designation of Ethiopia TPS is for 18 months, from December 12, 2022, to June 12, 2024. Prior to the end of the designation, the U.S. government will decide whether to extend TPS for Ethiopia or to end it


Do I Qualify for Ethiopia TPS?

You may qualify for Ethiopia TPS if:

  • You are a citizen of Ethiopia, AND

  • You have been in the U.S. since October 20, 2022, or earlier

*Certain crimes and other factors can make you ineligible for TPS*


To apply for Ethiopia TPS, you will need to gather certain documents, including:

  • An Ethiopian passport, birth certificate, or national ID;

  • Proof of entry into the U.S. such as a visa, passport stamp, I-94, or NTA;

  • Documents showing you have been in the U.S. since October 20, 2022, such as medical records, leases, pay stubs, or school records;

  • Records for any arrests, charges, and criminal court cases you may have from U.S. or anywhere else in the world;

  • Copies of any previous immigration applications you may have filed;

  • Any other immigration documents you have received during your time in the U.S.


How do I apply for Ethiopia TPS?

  • If you live in Maine and want to apply for Ethiopia TPS, please collect the documents listed above and visit www.ilapmaine.org/get-legal-help for information on how to schedule an appointment with ILAP.

  • You must apply before June 12, 2024. ILAP recommends applying as soon as possible.
