Maine’s only refugee resettlement program, Catholic Charities Maine Refugee and Immigration Services (RIS) is dedicated to helping those seeking a new life in America become independent, productive members of our community. Their accredited representatives also offer low-cost legal services.
City of Portland - Office of Economic Opportunity
The City of Portland and pro bono lawyers hold an immigration legal aid clinic on the second Thursday of each month from 12-5pm. Individuals may sign up for one time slot of one hour. Varying immigration situations and cases will be heard except for asylum.

In the Refugee and Human Rights Clinic, student serve as the attorneys assisting low-income immigrants. Maine Equal Justice provides assistance to Mainers who need help to meet basic needs like housing, food, and healthcare. You can call or fill out their online form to see if you may be able to get support through MaineCare, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), General Assistance, SNAP (Food Assistance), or other public assistance. The Maine Human Rights Commission is the State agency charged with the responsibility of enforcing Maine’s anti-discrimination laws. The Commission investigates complaints of unlawful discrimination in employment, housing, education, access to public accommodations, extension of credit, and offensive names.
