Emma Lazarus and her legacy of philanthropy

Emma Lazarus is most famous for her sonnet “The New Colossus,” which is inscribed on the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty and has served as a welcome for generations of immigrants to the United States. It is less well-known, however, that she wrote the poem to raise money for the construction of the very pedestal on which it is now featured, donating the piece to a benefit auction of art and literary works in 1883. Although Emma did not live to see “The New Colossus” installed on the Statue of Liberty, her gift remains her legacy into the 21st century and beyond.
